Nissan Micra Bids Farewell to UK

Over the last 18 years, since the first Nissan Micra left the production line in August 1992, Sunderland produced more than 2.3 million cars in the northeast plant. That record has now come to an end as the last Micra rolled off the factory floor.

This was the Japanese companies first foray into European production and with government aid the Nissan Micra very quickly established itself as a popular model, winning the coveted European Car of the Year award in 1993.

Between the company’s start in 1992 and 2002 they made 1.4 million Micra “K11” and a further 1.1 million of the newer “K12” models and included the companies first automated Coupe convert ible in 2005 the Nissan Micra C+C. The workforce is said to be sad to see the end of Micra production after such a long time but they are now gearing up for the new Nissan Juke, the company’s latest curvy compact SUV.

The Juke features the best of off-road SUV technology with the handling and performance of a sports car. Although beating the records set by the Micra will be difficult the Juke, Nissan believes to be a fantastic entry into the compact SUV market.

Production of the Nissan Micra will not end and is only being transferred to the new production plant join tly run by Renault-Nissan in Chennai, India where since May they have been supplying the local Indian market with exports due to appear in Europe in September.
